In our lifetime most Box and Crate styles had been identified in specifications and standards written and managed by the US (or British) government. In most recent years ASTM, a US based international organization that develops all sorts of standards for every imaginable industry, has taken over the task of rewriting the mostly retired government standards. Crate Pro is a software program that designs wood boxes and crates. As a result of the manner in which it works, Crate Pro allows for many more styles than those identified in the government or ASTM standards. Government styles typically start with PPP or MIL. ASTM styles are identified as Dnnnn. Crate Pro styles are identified as XXX-NNN where XXX is an indication of the type of construction and material. Government and ASTM standards associate styles with specific materials, sizes and capacities. Crate Pro styles identify the orientation and relative placement of materials but not materials, sizes or capacities.
