The School of Military Packaging Technology (SMPT) provides basic, specialized, and advanced training to develop the packaging skills of Department of Defense personnel.

Their goal is to help improve supply management and assure materiel readiness in a timely and cost-effective manner.

SMTP evolved from the Ordnance Packaging Course which was first presented in 1950.

In less than a year, the name was changed to the Joint Military Packaging Course due to a directive from the Secretary of Defense for the Army to establish and administer packaging schools that would serve both the Military and Private Industry. As courses and other missions were added, the name changed to the Joint Military Packaging Training Center.

In 1985 this Center became part of the Army Logistics Management College (ALMC) at Fort Lee, Virginia and the name changed to the School of Military Packaging Technology (SMPT). In 1997 the SMPT returned to the Ordnance Corps as part of the US Army Ordnance Center and Schools.

WoodenCRATES.org salutes the School of Military Packaging Technology because they are the anchor that holds us to the proven wood packaging standards. SMTP trains, tests and certifies people in the art and the science of wood packaging design.
